Right To Pee (RTP)

In the bustling heart of Mumbai, the program advocates for the establishment of free, hygienic, and secure public urinals exclusively for women.

Who Does It Benefit?

The program addresses a crucial need in the city’s stark reality, where only 1 out of every 3 public toilet seats is designated for women. Women face unequal pricing, being charged more than men for the same amenities. Moreover, the state of public toilets exacerbates the problem, often marred by unsanitary conditions and a lack of safety. This program aims to rectify these fundamental violations of dignity, health, and equal access to public spaces that custodians of urban sanitation exhibit remarkable apathy towards.

The RTP Approach

The Right To Pee (RTP) campaign emerged as a unified force, rallying for the establishment of clean, free, and secure public urinals for women in Mumbai. Our collective of members operates on two fronts: confronting the insensitive system head-on and collaborating with the government to drive meaningful transformation.

The RTP Strategies in Motion

Mapping Toilets

Our grassroots team delves into the heart of the matter by conducting comprehensive surveys and analysis of public sanitation facilities across Mumbai. Armed with a wealth of tangible data, we can effectively communicate the pressing need for improved sanitation and gender sensitivity to government and relevant stakeholders.

Amplifying Through Media

The Right To Pee movement leverages the power of mainstream and social media to amplify its voice. Through press conferences, Facebook Live streams, Twitter chats, and engagement with prominent news outlets, our grassroots team disseminates evidence on the dire state of sanitation, resonating with a broad audience.

Legal Advocacy

Right To Pee’s unwavering commitment translates into Environmental Interest Litigation, filed alongside fellow advocacy groups. This collective action calls for manufacturers of sanitary pads to include proper disposal mechanisms with their products.

Raising Awareness

Our arsenal of awareness strategies encompasses community wall paintings, petition drives, cultural performances, and public protests. Each avenue strives to shine a spotlight on our mission and issues.

Representation in System Processes

Our advocacy breakthroughs have secured our participation in committees dedicated to shaping the city’s development in alignment with sanitation and gender needs. This influence extends to inclusion in the curriculum of Municipal Sanitation Officers, amplifying gender sensitization with Right To Pee’s support.
